Maui pedestrian accident leaves woman critically injured

A 55-year-old woman sustained critical injuries after she was struck by a vehicle in Kahului early today.

Police said a four-door 2003 Nissan Sentra was traveling northbound on Puunene Avenue when it struck the pedestrian at the intersection of East Hawaii Street shortly after 6:40 a.m., according to a Maui Police Department news release.

The woman was walking across Puunene Avenue in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.

She sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said it is unknown at this time whether speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
