Kauai police arrest Kapaa man after crash sends 2 to hospital

Kauai police arrested a 26-year-old man from Kapaa in connection with a two-vehicle crash in Waipouli Friday night.

Police arrested Jared Weinstock on suspicion of negligent injury after his car collided with an oncoming pickup truck, causing the closure of Kuhio Highway in both directions for a few hours Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Weinstock was driving a Toyota Corolla heading southbound on Kuhio Highway shortly after 9 p.m. when he turned his car at the wrong time and collided into an oncoming Toyota pickup truck driven by a 56-year-old man from Kapaa with a 53-year-old woman as a passenger, according to a news release.

The pickup truck driver sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Wilcox Hospital, police said. His passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to Queen’s Hospital.

Police closed Kuhio Highway shortly after the incident Friday night and reopened the highway 12:40 a.m. Saturday morning.

Police released Weinstock pending an ongoing investigation.
