An adult male suspect was fatally shot by police after the suspect reportedly sped toward an officer during a traffic stop Tuesday morning. Honolulu police are awaiting a toxicology report to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

Police investigated the scene of an officer-involved shooting near the Kamehameha Shopping Center this morning.

Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Kalihi involving an adult male suspect who police fatally shot after the suspect reportedly sped toward an officer during a traffic stop early today.

Police said two officers stopped a black sport utility vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of Kapalama Avenue and Hala Drive near Kamehameha Shopping Center at approximately 1:35 a.m.

As one of the officers was approaching the vehicle, the suspect allegedly accelerated his vehicle toward him.

Police said the officer discharged his firearm at the suspect. The SUV then struck a police vehicle and crashed into a light pole.

Police administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the suspect, who sustained gunshot wounds, until Emergency Medical Services arrived.

Police said the suspect was pronounced dead at approximately 2:30 a.m.

He was the sole occupant in the SUV. Positive identification is pending.

The officer who discharged his firearm was uninjured.

Police temporarily shut down a section of Kapalama Avenue to investigate and reopened the roadway shortly before 7:15 a.m.
