The Coast Guard is asking the public to help identify a red and yellow kayak that was found adrift Monday evening off Kalepolepo Beach Park, Maui.

After receiving notification of the kayak from the Maui Fire Department, Coast Guard watchstanders issued at 12:25 p.m. today an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast notice to mariners to keep an eye out for signs of distress.

There are no current reports of missing persons in the area.

A good Samaritan noticed the kayak, recovered it and turned it over to Maui police.

Fire personnel searched along the shore Monday evening for a mile north and south of the area.

Anyone with information that may help identify the kayak owner is asked to call Sector Honolulu at 842-2600.

The Coast Guard offers free “If Found” decals to mark gear, or owners can write directly on gear, including kayaks, surfboard or safety equipment such as lifejackets.

The information can help responders determine whether someone is in distress more quickly and help get equipment returned.

Labels are available at local harbormasters, through the Coast Guard Auxiliary, from Honolulu Sail and Power Squadron offices and at select marine retail and supply stores.

Those who lose equipment should report it to the Coast Guard.
