More than 60 stings were reported to lifeguards and staff this morning at Hanauma Bay, according to officials.

Honolulu officials announced this morning that the beach at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve on Oahu is closed due to an influx of box jellyfish.

More than 60 stings were reported to lifeguards and staff this morning, according to officials.

The Hanauma Bay staff and Honolulu Ocean Safety officials will reassess the situation Saturday morning to determine whether it is safe to reopen the beach.

In the meantime, the upper viewing area, visitor center, and both parking lots remain open under normal operating hours.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public while this popular beach area is closed,” said the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation in a statement.
