Mililani man, 27, dies following car crash with intoxicated driver in Kaneohe
A 27-year-old Mililani man has died today following a two-vehicle crash with an intoxicated driver between Kahekili Highway and Likelike Highway.
Honolulu police arrested a 29-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding through a red light, leading to the death of the Mililani man.
The Kaneohe man, 29, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and criminal contempt.
The crash occurred around 1:09 a.m. when a Kaneohe man was driving northbound on Kahekili Highway with a Kaneohe female passenger, 29. The driver ran a red light at the intersection of Likelike Highway and Kahekili Highway, where he broadsided and overturned the car driven by the Mililani man who was traveling westbound on Likelike Highway, according to police reports.
The Mililani man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Kaneohe man and woman both sustained minor injuries in the crash. The woman refused to be treated at the scene.
The crash caused the temporary closure of all Honolulu-bound lanes of Likelike Highway between Kahekili Highway and Anoi Road. Honolulu police cleared the accident scene and reopened the roads just before 5 a.m.
This is the 15th traffic fatality this year compared to 15 at the same time last year.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
