Police closed Kamehameha Highway near the intersection of Kamananui and Kaukonahua roads Sunday morning to investigate a shooting. Above, Kamehameha Highway at Kamananui Road outside of Wahiawa.

Honolulu police say a 30-year-old man suspected of shooting a motorist in Wahiawa on Sunday morning was later found dead of a gunshot wound to the head.

They say the motorist, a 34-year-old female visiting from Southern California, and her 32-year-old husband, were traveling south on Kamehameha Highway about 5:45 a.m. when a van in front of them swerved to the right lane. That’s when they spotted the 30-year-old man standing in the middle of the roadway.

The visitors told police the suspect jumped in front of their vehicle and made verbal demands while pointing a firearm at them. They said the suspect then shot once, hitting the female behind the wheel. Her husband was not injured.

The suspect and the motorists did not know each other, police said.

The couple drove away then pulled over on the side of the highway to call 911.

Police said the officers responding to that call got a second call of an unresponsive male in the middle of the roadway. Officers attending to the second call found the 30-year-old man dead of a gunshot wound to his head. They also recovered a weapon at the scene.

The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said an ambulance crew went to Kamehameha Highway at Kamananui Road and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The ambulance crew also transported the 34-year-old woman in stable condition to Wahiawa General Hospital.

Police say the visitors later identified the dead man as the person who shot at them. They have classified the case as an attempted first-degree murder and unattended death. Police have not identified the dead man.

Jessica Lani Rich, president and CEO of the Visitor Aloha Society, said she booked a flight back to California for the couple upon the woman’s release from the hospital. She said the couple flew back to the mainland today.

“The airline met them at the airport and is taking really good care of them,” Rich said.

She added, “(The husband) said, ‘We want to leave as soon as they’re done with the investigation.’ It could have been worse. Thank goodness it wasn’t.”

The Honolulu Police Department closed Kamehameha Highway near the intersection of Kamananui and Kaukonahua roads near Dole Plantation this morning as they investigated.

Kamehameha Highway was completely reopened to traffic shortly after 11 a.m.
