Snorkeler dies after being pulled from Kauai waters
A male visitor died after being pulled from waters while snorkeling off Pu‘u Poa Beach in Princeville this morning, Kauai police said.
He has been identified as Joseph Nesselroth, 64, of Colorado.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m., Hanalei firefighters were notified of an unresponsive snorkeler being brought to shore on Pu‘u Poa Beach.
Based on a preliminary investigation, the man was snorkeling with his fiance and a tour group when he became distressed approximately 20 yards from shore. Bystanders brought the unresponsive man to shore, where they began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Firefighters took over upon arrival, but efforts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful.
Paramedics transported Nesselroth to Mahelona Meidcal Center, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death. Foul play is not suspected, police said.
