A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska this morning.

A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska today but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The preliminary 6.5 magnitude quake struck at 11:36 a.m. Hawaii time at a depth of 19.2 miles 48.1 miles southeast of Amchitka, Alaska, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the National Weather Service said in a bulletin.

No serious injuries were immediately reported.
