A major earthquake struck Papua New Guinea but did not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii this morning.

The magnitude 7.1 quake struck 22.7 miles southeast of Bulolo, Morobe, Papua New Guinea, at 11:19 a.m. Hawaii time at a depth of 79 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The earthquake was too deep to generate a tsunami officials said.

No serious injuries or significant damage was immediately reported.

Christopher Lam was in Lae, about 60 miles north of Bulolo, and said the rumble from the quake was audible.

“It was big. You can hear it. Got stuff thrown around in the house and the power is now cut off,” he tweeted, alongside a video that showed his home rattling.
