Memorial Day has just passed, so it is time to hear the complaints about the lantern floating ceremony being held on Memorial Day (“Memorial Day is not lantern floating day,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, May 31).
We all know Memorial Day is a day of remembering those who have died while serving in the U.S. armed forces.
Let’s look at the list of all federal holidays to see which one could be viewed as the best fit as a general day of remembrance. New Year’s Day. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Washington’s birthday. Memorial Day. Independence Day. Labor Day. Columbus Day. Veterans Day. Thanksgiving Day. Christmas Day.
What? We have no day in the U.S. set aside as a day of remembrance for all loved ones?
I, for one, will continue to use Memorial Day as a time to remember my son, my parents, my brother, my loved ones, as well as honoring those who died to protect my freedom.
