Honokaa man dies, another hurt in head-on collision on Highway 19

A 24-year-old man was killed and another man was injured in a head-on collision on Highway 19 in Honokaa this morning, Hawaii County officials said.

The man who died was identified as Lloyd W. Edwards of Honokaa.

Hawaii island police said that just before 6 a.m. a 2017 Honda Civic 4-door-sedan heading east on Highway 19 crossed the double solid yellow center line into oncoming traffic, striking a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck that was heading west. The collision occurred just west of the 46-mile marker.

Emergency personnel said they the driver of the Honda was not responsive and was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:03 a.m.

The pickup truck driver, a 25-year-old male from Honokaa, was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital and was in stable condition, police said.

Police said they believe speed and inattention were factors in the crash, and that an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident should contact Officer Blayne Matsui at (808) 961-2339.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours after the accident as police investigated. One lane was opened by late morning and both lanes were reopened around noon.

This is the 23rd traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year compared with 28 at this time last year.
