A 55-year-old man working on a pump in a water catchment system at a Makiki apartment complex died after a co-worker found him in the water, according to the Honolulu Fire Department and the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.

The co-worker had stepped away from the job site Wednesday morning and when he returned found his colleague in the water about 20 feet below the opening to the catchment system, an HFD spokesman said.

The medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Dean Hoe of Honolulu. A cause of death was not available.

The two Doonwood Engineering employees were working on the pump in a basement area at the Fountains at Makiki when the incident happened, according to HFD.

It was not know if the man fell into the water, which was in a confined space of about 10 by 15 feet at the bottom of a ladder, according to the fire department.
