Two men made their initial appearance in court today in connection with a Nov. 20 fight that led to the deadly shooting of a 39-year-old Waianae man at Makaha Valley Community Park.

Brenon Nash, 28, and Sheysten Joseph, 19, were charged with attempted murder in the second degree for firing handguns at another man during the early evening melee at the park on Manuku Street.

Both are being held on bail set at $500,000 each.

Micaiah McCullah, the father of seven children and a youth football coach, was killed during the brawl.

After the shooting, McCullah’s wife started a GoFundme page to help pay for funeral expenses.

“These past 48 house have been a complete nightmare that I wish I could wake up from,” Charity McCullah wrote on the GoFundme page. “I just want to say how thankful I am to all of you for your kind generosity. This is lifting a burden off of me that I thought I would have to face alone.”

Nash and Joseph were part of a group of 10 to 20 males who came to the park for a prearranged fight at the park’s basketball court, according to court records.

Detectives talked to a man and other witnesses who identified Nash and Joseph as firing their revolver-type handguns at the man, documents say.

Honolulu Emergency Services Department reported responding to a scene where multiple shots were fired at about 7:10 p.m. The victim suffered gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, the department said.
