Workers repair gas leak at Waimanalo Town Center caused by broken pipe

Firefighters responded to a gas leak at Waimanalo Town Center in East Oahu this morning that was allegedly caused by a broken pipe.

“First and foremost, there is no more gas leak,” said Hawa‘i Gas spokesman Alan Tang. “We got the report at 9 a.m., and in a little less than 90 minutes, it was all taken care of.”

Tang said it was his understanding that a homeless person had broken a pipe to the gas storage tank which supplies three businesses at the shopping center at 41-1537 Kalanianaole Highway.

The gas was shut off upon the gas company crew’s arrival, and repairs undertaken, with fire and police personnel present.

No injuries were reported. Police said they are investigating.
