A man who was swept into the ocean on the North Shore of Oahu on Saturday has died, authorities said.

Honolulu lifeguards pulled the man out of the water between an area called Three Tables and Waimea Bay, the Honolulu Emergency Services Department said.

The man had been walking a “rocky cliff line” towards Waimea Bay about 3 p.m. when he was hit by a wave and swept out into the ocean. Surf was described as being 4 to 8 feet.

Lifeguards found him 20 feet underwater and brought him to shore, where they performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation on him. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services continued CPR and took him to an emergency room in critical condition.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said the case remains under investigation and further information was not available today.
