Police investigated the scene of an overnight barricade situation in Hauula this morning.

Honolulu police arrested a 32-year-old man after he allegedly barricaded himself in a Hauula home and fired gunshots, one of which grazed a neighbor in the arm.

This is the second time the suspect barricaded himself in the home in two years.

Police officers responded to a report of an armed male wearing a tactical vest outside of a home on Hauula Homestead Road shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday. “The man ran into the home when officers arrived and refused to exit,” said Sarah Yoro, spokeswoman of the Honolulu Police Department in an email.

Police evacuated nearby residents and the SWAT team responded to the scene including crisis negotiators who attempted to speak to the suspect.

“Shortly after 1 a.m., the suspect began firing multiple rounds at the officers, striking a neighbor in the arm and damaging the police armored vehicle and robot,” Yoro said.

An officer then shot the suspect in the shoulder and he taken to the hospital for treatment. None of the officers sustained any injuries.

Police arrested the alleged gunman at about 4:30 a.m. on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree attempted murder against a law enforcement officer, one count of a firearm-related offense and criminal contempt of court.

Charges are pending.

Affected residents were able to return to their homes sometime after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Resident Marvin Iseke, who has lived in the neighborhood for about 20 years, said three bullets struck his neighbor’s house next door and one of them grazed his 58-year-old neighbor in the left arm while he was inside his home. Emergency Medical Services treated him for his injury.

In January 2018, police responded to the same home after the same man barricaded himself when officers served him with a bench warrant. The SWAT team broke through the front door of the residence and apprehended him. No injuries were reported.

The suspect has a criminal record of a 2018 misdemeanor conviction for criminal property damage.
