Bicyclist critically injured in collision with truck in Kalihi

A 48-year-old man is in critical condition after he collided with a pickup truck while riding his bicycle across a street in Kalihi Tuesday night.

The collision occurred at the intersection of N. Nimitz Highway and Kalihi Street at about 6:55 p.m.

Police said a 1992 Ford pickup truck operated by a 58-year-old man was traveling eastbound on the highway when the vehicle collided with the bicyclist traveling southbound on Kalihi Street in a marked crosswalk but against a “don’t walk” red palm signal.

The bicyclist was taken in critical condition to a hospital. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

Police said speed, alcohol or drugs were not involved on the part of the pickup driver. It’s unknown at this time whether they were factors on the part of the bicyclist.

The investigation is ongoing.
