Hilo driver, 73, dies after failing to stop at a stop sign

A 73-year-old Hilo man died after he reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign and the Jeep he was driving was broadsided this morning in Hilo, Hawaii County police announced today.

They identified the Jeep Wrangler driver as Soo Lee.

Lee was unconscious at the scene of the 4:52 a.m. collision and was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:51 a.m.

Police said the Jeep Wrangler, with a soft top and removable doors, was heading east on Kukuau Street when it failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck broadside by a 2004 Dodge Ram truck heading south on Komohana Street.

The Jeep passenger, a 29-year-old Hilo man, ,was taken to Hilo Medical for non-life-threatening injuries, and is in stable condition.

The Dodge Ram driver, a 34-year-old Hilo man, was not injured. His 75-year-old male passenger, also from Hilo, was taken to Hilo Medical, where he was treated and released.

Police determined that inattention to driving is a factor in the collision, and do not believe alcohol or drugs are factors.

This is the 14th Hawaii island traffic fatality compared to 18 this same time period last year.
