A Kurtistown man has been charged after hitting a police vehicle with a stolen one he was driving.

Just after 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday police officers with the Hawaii Police Department’s Area I Special Enforcement Unit located a stolen vehicle parked on Lanikukia Street with Dominick Gonzado, 26, in the driver’s seat. As they approached the vehicle, Gonzado allegedly accelerated the stolen vehicle into police vehicle. The stolen vehicle then hit a stone wall and became disabled, and police arrested Gonzado.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Today, Gonzado was charged with: three counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle; first-degree theft; two counts of first-degree criminal property damage; two counts of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle; two counts of burglary during emergency period; third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug; drug paraphernalia; resisting an order to stop motor vehicle; and two counts of driving without a valid driver’s license.

The stolen vehicle was towed to Hilo Police Station and secured pending execution of a search warrant, which resulted in the recovery of property that was taken during a Sunday burglary in Papaaloa along with a glass smoking pipe with residue.

Detectives also linked Gonzado to a burglary in Hawaiian Paradise Park on Monday along with a “series of gasoline theft from vehicles in Hilo during the past week.”

Gonzado is in custody in lieu of a $196,000 bail.
