A 35-year-old woman visiting from California was the victim of a “possible shark attack” off Kaanapali Thursday, the Maui Fire Department said.

The woman was brought onto shore by surfers and taken by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center with “severe trauma injuries to the front torso,” the MFD said in a news release.

The “victim was alert and oriented upon arrival of MFD.”

MFD listed the incident as a possible shark attack while surfing or paddle boarding.

The fire department responded to a call at 2:53 p.m. at 4007 Lower Honoapililani Road near Kaanapali, MFD said.

“Call (was) initially dispatched as a drowning, victim (was) being brought in to shore by other surfers and already on the beach upon MFD arrival,” MFD said.

The MFD “crew assisted medics with carrying the victim up to the ambulance and (she) was transported to MMMC,” the release said. “Ocean Safety units patrolled the area and advised beach-goers to stay out of the water. Recon and patrols will resume in the morning.”
