Fire chars abandoned home in Makaha
Honolulu firefighters extinguished a large fire that charred an abandoned home in Makaha early today.
More than 40 firefighters responded to the blaze at a two-story structure at 84-1162 Lahaina Street shortly after 2:45 a.m. Upon arrival, they observed the home fully involved in flames, the Honolulu Fire Department said.
Lola Naeole who lives next door said her husband was getting ready for work when he observed fire on the ground floor of the vacant home. Within minutes, the structure went up in flames.
“It was very scary,” she said.
Her son-in-law, Justin Naeole, immediately grabbed a garden hose and began spraying water on the roofs of their homes to protect it from any embers.
He also shot water at the large flames emanating from the windows of the abandoned home until firefighters arrived at the scene.
