2 free divers who died after rescue from waters off Waianae identified

Two free divers died after they became distressed in waters near Lualualei Beach Park in Waianae Monday.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified them as 54-year-old Alejandro G. Palisbo and 69-year-old William H. Amamalin Jr.

A man was diving in the water when he became distressed sometime before 12:40 pm. Monday. A second man attempted to save the other when he ran into trouble himself.

A good Samaritan brought one diver to shore and Honolulu firefighters and Ocean Safety brought the other man to shore.

They administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to both divers later identified as Palisbo and Amamalin until Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived and conducted life-saving measures.

Both men were taken in critical condition to a hospital where they died.

The Honolulu Fire Department said ocean conditions were rough at the time.
