The wooden structure located at 118 Kaiolena Drive was destroyed by fire.

Honolulu firefighters extinguished a large fire that destroyed a home in Lanikai early today.

Ten units with about 30 firefighters responded to the fire at 118 Kaiolena Dr. just after 2:20 a.m.

When they arrived, they saw smoke and flames emanating from all four sides of a single-story home that was under construction, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 3 a.m. and extinguished it about an hour later.

There were no occupants at the home at the time and no injuries were reported.

The home is located near Lanikai Park and steps away from a public access walkway that leads to Lanikai Beach.

Lois Crozer who lives less than a mile away from the house saw a red glow and large plume of white smoke billowing from the house.

“It was kind of unnerving,” she said. “I’m glad nobody was hurt.”

Investigators from the fire department were at the scene this morning to investigate the cause of the blaze. A damage estimate has yet to be determined.

Some area residents stopped in front of the home, in shock, as they observed the gutted structure with a large section of the roof caved in.

According to neighbors, the home has been under construction for the past four to five years.
