Library tweaks fees for late books, DVDs

Hawaii public library patrons will pay higher overdue fees in some cases but less in others under rule changes that took effect Thursday.

Overdue fees for youth patrons (age 17 and under) have increased from 15 cents per item, per day, to 25 cents. The maximum late fee increased from $4.50 to $7.50 per item.

However, overdue fees for DVDs and videos were lowered from $1 per day to 25 cents. The rental fee for DVDs and videos is still $1 for seven days.

Other major rule changes in effect are:

» Parents and guardians are informed that they will be held financially responsible for any fines or fees incurred by the minor whose application they are signing.

» The cost of a replacement library card for Hawaii residents and military members will decrease from $10 to $5.

» Smoking is prohibited within 20 feet of a library.
