Scouts of Ship 5011 practice their skills at sea. Chartered by the Kauai Police Activities League, the ship has a crew of 25 scouts.

For Boy Scouts in Hawaii and in the United States, 2010 marks 100 years of Scouting. Each Sunday throughout the year, the Star-Advertiser will present historic photographs and factoids to help commemorate the centennial.

Sea Scout Ship 5011, chartered by the Kauai Police Activities League, was launched in June 2009 by Larry Richardson and his son Max. It now has a growing crew of 25 Scouts who were active during the summer’s maritime adventures.

The group’s longest cruise was five days at sea in waters around Kauai. Sea Scouting is a co-educational program offered to young people (male and female) between the ages of 14 and 21. It provides opportunities to develop maritime skills that can lead to careers.
