Future Dukie bedevils Moanalua
Oak Hill's Damien Wilson sailed in for a dunk in an easy win over Moanalua last night.
The dunk-a-thon hath beginneth.
As spectacular as Oak Hill played last night in a 108-33 win over Moanalua, the vital link was Quinn Cook.
The Warriors rolled to a 21-1 lead and never looked back as Cook, a Duke-bound point guard, dished out 16 assists and added 17 points.
"Sixteen? I just want to thank my teammates for that," Cook said. "It’s my second time coming to this tournament. We were here two years ago. We didn’t win it then, but we have a lot more weapons and I’m older, more mature and better, and the catalyst of this team. We’re just working hard to reach our goal. Doesn’t matter if we win by 90 points or one point, as long as we win."
Cook, a Washington D.C. native who transferred to Oak Hill from DeMatha this year, was influenced by chocolate as a child.
"Jason Williams, a.k.a. White Chocolate. I really liked watching him pass the ball, getting everybody the ball," Cook said.
Oak Hill moved up to No. 1 this week in the USA Today Super 25. The Warriors’ roster has players from Chicago to New York to Atlanta. They love to run.
"We like to play fast," Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said. "We got after them tonight. We didn’t get into the press like we normally do, but we got into transition and up and down the floor pretty good."
Oak Hill’s quickness and size — all but three players are listed at 6-foot-4 and taller — nullified a gritty effort by Moanalua.
Keith Hornsby, a 6-4 guard, added 16 points, and high-flying Ben McLemore added 15 points. Several of Cook’s passes were alley-oops in transition to McLemore, a 6-5 senior. Damien Wilson added 12 points while Daniel Gomis and R.J. Curington had 10 points apiece.
"Coach said, ‘Have fun.’ Oak Hill, they’re No. 1," Moanalua swingman Dexter Williams said. "They’re good. They’re real good."
Williams was held scoreless before scoring seven points in the final quarter. Wesley Armbrust also finished with seven points.
Precision and tremendous transition — all of their bigs ran the floor for Cook — made it an efficient win for Oak Hill, which shot 66 percent from the field (45-for-68).
Oak Hill will play host ‘Iolani tomorrow in quarterfinal action, and rankings won’t mean a thing at tip-off.
"We don’t try to emphasize it or talk about it too much," Smith said. "They know. They see the Internet. They know what they’re rated and stuff. We’re just trying to take each game as it comes and hopefully, at the end, they’ll reach their team goals and individual goals."
Smith was as laid back as any powerhouse coach could be at the Classic.
"They’re a close-knit group. They like each other. They like spending time off the court together," he said.

Micah Dunhour and Kimo Makaula paced the Dolphins with 16 points apiece. AOP trailed 18-13 early in the second quarter before Dr. Phillips went on a 19-9 run to close the first half.
