Firefighters cut up a banyan tree that fell onto a house at 41 Dowsett Street in Nuuanu this morning.

Large branches from a banyan tree believed to be diseased or infested with insects crashed onto a Nuuanu home this morning, but did not injure any of the house’s three occupants.

Jennifer Sparacio said one of the branches of the tree penetrated the roof and the ceiling above the bedroom where her 5-year-old daughter, Alina, sleeps, at 41 Dowsett Ave. The tree is on the residential lot.

“We were all sitting on the sofa in the living room when I heard a loud noise,” said Sparacio, who moved into the three-bedroom house in March. “It was an extremely loud noise, like nothing I can describe.”

Her daughter’s reaction was: “Mommy the tree broke my bedroom roof.”

“It could have been much more worse … much more worse,” Sparacio added.

Sparacio said she called the fire department after the branches hit the home about 9:45 a.m.
