Two men, apparently long-time adversaries, ran into each other yesterday afternoon on a Kaneohe street and began fighting; one of the men lunged at the other with a machete, police said.

The men are acquaintances who have a history of harassment between each other, police said. Both men have restraining orders against each other prohibiting contact between them, a police report said.

They were driving in Kaneohe at about 3:20 p.m. when they crossed paths and began arguing, police said. The argument escalated when a 28-year-old Kahaluu man brandished a machete, left his vehicle and struck the hood of the 34-year-old man’s vehicle.

The suspect allegedly tried to stab the man with the machete through the passenger window of the victim’s vehicle. The 34-year-old man was in the driver’s seat, drove away unharmed and reported the incident at the Kaneohe police station, police said.

Police arrested the suspect when he showed up at the Kaneohe police station a few minutes later to also report the incident. Police said he was arrested for attempted murder, criminal property damage and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
