Kauai and Oahu should start drying out today as a storm that caused minor nuisances yesterday works its way toward the Big Island.

"For Oahu and Kauai in particular, it should be dry," said National Weather Service forecaster Henry Lau. "I think all the focus will be on the Big Island (today) where they we will get some scattered showers and a chance of thunderstorms."

Isolated showers might remain on Oahu this morning, and then skies should clear and become mostly sunny by the afternoon.

Maui can expect isolated showers this afternoon with the possibility of thundershowers.

A flash flood watch remained in effect for Oahu and Kauai until 6 a.m. today.

The storm felled several trees on Oahu last night.

A tree that fell at about 6 p.m. blocked all the lanes of Kaukonahua Road near Thompson Corner in Waialua until crews could remove it by 6:50 p.m. There were scattered reports of fallen trees in Waipahu and near Turtle Bay.

Heavy rain pelted Kauai during the day but abated by nightfall.

Rain gauges in Kokee and Wainiha showed rain falling at a rate of 3 to 4 inches per hour at 1:46 p.m., the Weather Service said.

Moderate rain was still falling over most of Kauai at about 4:30 p.m., and standing water closed roads near Limahuli Valley in Haena, officials said.

Lightning strikes on Kauai forced the closure of the Kekaha Landfill, county officials said.

The landfill was to be closed until further notice. For up-to-date information, county officials recommended calling the landfill at 337-1416.

Meanwhile, a high-surf warning remained in effect until noon today for north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Oahu and until 6 p.m. for west-facing shores of the Big Island.
