14-year-old boy arrested in knifepoint robbery in Waikiki

Police arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the robbery of a Japanese tourist Tuesday night in Waikiki.

Police said the teen approached a 15-year-old boy on Liliuokalani Avenue about 8:40 p.m., showed a 6-inch knife and demanded money. The robber ran away after the victim gave him some cash.

An employee of the ABC Store on Liliuokalani Avenue said the alleged robber was harrassing an employee in the store just before the robbery. He left, but about 10 minutes later, the victim came into the store and said he was robbed. She said the robber got away with three dollars in cash, all the money that the boy had.

Officers located the alleged robber about 30 minutes later on the beach, and the victim identified him as the assailant, the employee said.

Police notified the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, who said the boy and his family returned home this morning.

It was the second time a  Japanese tourist was targeted in Honolulu this month. In early July, a man stabbed a Japanese tourist in the shoulder during an attempted robbery in Palolo. The tourist was in good condition, and police later arrested Kelsey Lewis, 18, who was charged in the stabbing.
