High surf advisory covers Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Molokai
Waves peaking at 20 to 24 feet are expected on north shores of Oahu, Kauai County, Maui and Molokai this weekend, prompting a high surf advisory until 6 a.m. Sunday.
The advisory started at 10 a.m. today for Kauai, and and begins at 4 p.m. for Oahu, Maui and Molokai.
The National Weather Service said surf is expected to raise rapidly to 14 to 18 feet this afternoon, peak late tonight, but remain large through Saturday night.
West shores are also under the advisory. Surf there is expected to rise rapidly to 8 to 12 feet this afternoon and peak at 12 to 18 feet tonight.
Forecasters say the surf will create strong breaking waves and shore break and strong rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous.
Beachgoers should heed advice from lifeguards and exercise caution.
