BYU-Hawaii swept in NCAA DII volleyball title match

Brigham Young-Hawaii’s quest for an 11th national volleyball championship fell short today when the Seasiders were swept by Concordia-St. Paul 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 in the NCAA II title match in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

It was the seventh consecutive championship for the Golden Bears (35-3), an NCAA record for any collegiate level of volleyball. It was the first loss in 23 matches for the Seasiders (29-1). The match lasted 72 minutes.

Junior hitter Shih Ting “Stella” Chen was limited to season-low nine kills as BYUH hit just .135. Junior libero Bry Tatupu-Leopoldo had 10 digs for the Seasiders, who lost the dig battle 55-30, the block battle  and the ace battle 6-2.

Riley Hanson led the Golden Bears with 15 kills and Emily McDonough added 12. Concordia hit .374.

Named to the NCAA all-tournament team from BYU-Hawaii were Chen, junior setter Ying Chun “Michelle” Chen and junior middle Erh Fang “Ariel” Hsu.
