Hikers who tried ‘short cut’ rescued from Moanalua Valley

The Fire Department helicopter rescued a father and son, who got into trouble hiking in Moanalua Valley when they left a marked trail.

A 49-year-old man and his 18-year-old son called the fire department at 5:13 p.m. Wednesday after trying a short cut to get down from the summit, Capt.. David Jenkins, Fire Department spokesman said.

The fire department’s helicopter located the pair at 5:25 p.m..but because of power lines in the area, authorities decided to suspended operations until Thursday morning.

The rescue operations resumed at 6:20 a.m. and the two men were airlifted off the mountain at 7:54 a.m.

“They are cold, wet and safe,” said Jenkins.

“The lesson here is that you should stay on the marked trail.”
