San Diego State Aztec player quarterback Ryan Katz was tackled by University of Hawaii Warrior football player quarterback Jeremy Higgins in a game played at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA on Saturday.

San Diego State will be returning to the Mountain West Conference, giving the league 12 members for the 2013 football season, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The move was first reported today by CBSsports.com.

The Aztecs, who had been a founding member of the MWC, where they have played the past 14 seasons, were to join the Big East in 2013 for football. But following Boise State’s similar reversal last month, the Aztecs will also return to the MWC.

The MWC had given San Diego State until the end of the month to make a decision under terms of the deal that brought Boise State back.

The Aztecs’ return also means San Diego State will keep its other teams in the MWC, reversing plans that would have placed them, especially the strong men’s basketball program, in the Big West with Hawaii for 2013-’14.

Under terms of a contract signed last year with the Big West, the Aztecs will owe the conference a six-figure buyout.

Next up for the MWC will be redrawing its 2013 football schedule. The schedule, which had been configured for a 10-member league was “torn up” last month, commissioner Craig Thompson had said. San Jose State and Utah State had previously been announced as additions to the MWC.
