Back in the saddle
I have a button given to me by Ellen Swedberg, one of the wonderful “Five-0” fanatics, who trekked all the way to Hawaii for the “Sunset on the Beach” premiere of “Hawaii Five-0.” It’s of McGarrett on a horse and the caption on the button says, “Save a Horse, Ride A Cowboy.” And tonight folks, I understood the meaning of my fan souvenir. McGarrett is definitely all cowboy as he races to catch a getaway plane, as well as pulling out a few rodeo moves as he tries not to get bucked out of position as head of the Five-0 task force. At least McG stayed on his horse for more than eight seconds, but for how long can he keep himself in the saddle this season? I’m sure we will keep watching to find out.
McG’s main competitor for King — or should I say Queen — of the rodeo crown is the show’s newest addition, Department of Homeland Security officer Lori Weston, played by Lauren German. Appointed by Gov. Denning, Weston has big shoes to fill, as the team is still missing their rookie Kono, who is unfortunately still on suspension. Kono spends a fair amount of this episode being pursued by hardball HPD Internal Affairs Capt. Vince Fryer. If Danno thought he was the by-the-book guy, he seems to have nothing on this Fryer.
Yet, neither can be called tonight’s rodeo clowns — no matter how funny Fryer looks in an aloha shirt and blazer, nor how awkward it is for Weston to walk in black peep-toe pumps on Bellows Beach.
But no matter how many times I wanted someone to crack a smile or make a joke about the usurping of power that seemed to be going on in this episode, I had to remind myself that this episode, titled “Ua Lawe Wale” (which is translated on the CBS press site to mean “Taken,” was all about the taking of something — a child, a leadership role, a badge). There was a whole lot of taking going on in this episode. The question is, can McG and the team handle all that is starting to be taken from them?
But this is not really a foreign concept to McGarrett — his mother was taken, his childhood was taken, his father was taken, now it seems, so has his team. Albeit, he still is a leader in Danny and Chin’s eyes, but still, she could be the straw that breaks the cowboy’s back.
Yet, if we look at the Hawaiian translation of “Ua Lawe Wale,” according to my friend and Hawaiian language expert T Ilihia Gionson, “lawe means to take. To lawe wale is to just take, as opposed to asking and then taking. So it really translates closer to stealing than taking. Ua is past tense, so Ua Lawe Wale really means, “stolen.”
So when we look at the episode, “stolen” is very appropriate. A child is stolen from her parents, a child who was going to be stolen at birth so she could get medical care and not grow up to be the next child bride in her grandfather’s cult. McG’s “immunity and means” has been stolen by the Governor Denning and enacted by Lori Weston. And Kono’s career has been stolen by Capt. Fryer. I suppose if you insert taken for stolen, you’d get the same outcome. And it’s not really a happy one. Well, the child being reunited with her mother at the end could possibly be considered a happy ending — it will at least steal your heart.
Overall, the entire episode made me realize a few things. McG and the boys are back in the saddle, as the humor and the brotherly love was alive and well, especially during the “how’s your date” scene and even Weston adding to the banter with her “how long have you two been married?” It was great to also see Chin Ho back on his iron horse and McG galloping in to save the day. My only wish would be that Kono gets back to the team post haste.
I also realized that no matter what is being taken from the Five-0 team, from McGarrett or from Kono, nothing is going to stop them from holding on to their reigns and riding out whatever trouble may be brewing in that fantastically beautiful Hawaiian sunset. Take my word for it.

Some of the local talent in the episode included Star 101.9 DJ Maleko McDonnell who played the Announcer for the “Molokai2Oahu Paddle Board Race” and Dennis Chun reprised his role as Sgt. Duke Lukela. Always great to see familiar faces on “Hawaii Five-0.”
A MAILE Alert is Hawaii’s version of an AMBER Alert. MAILE stands for Minor Abducted in Life-threatening Emergency and is named in memory of 6-year-old Maile Gilbert, who was abducted from her Kailua home in 1985.

I was super-disappointed in last night episode. The flirting was trite and uncomfortable and Steve seemed very out-of-character. I am trying to give this new addition a chance, but she was so bad last night it was painful. I hope my favorite show bounces back next week.
Denise – Well said, my thoughts too. She had no chemistry with Steve or the team. Chemistry can’t be forced. The character is a cliche, the delivery flat and seemed to take up all the screen time. Steve was very out of character and had hardly any interaction with the team. Danny and Chin were extras, with only Chin worried about Kono. Kono only had a small amount of screen time and deserved to have her ohana there to support her. The ep, outside the horsegument, fell flat. It wasn’t the show I love or want to see.

Great episode of Hawaii Five-0, full of action, fantastic scenery and good chemistry! I enjoyed every second of it. Weston works well with 50! I hope Kono returns soon to the unit. Kono is going through some difficult times!

Hey girl….great job as usual. I love your take on these shows sooooo much! You have a very unique perspective and I love the little lesson in Hawaiian and Hawaii culture we get each week. It makes us feel so much more connected to our favorite show especially for those of us who are so far away from Hawaii.
I liked this episode. I won’t say it’s one of my favorites because the crime of the week left me a bit cold but I like the introduction of Fryer and Weston. Fryer is really creepy and I’m anxious to see what he has in store for Kono. I do not believe she is just being left out in the wind. I believe he has a special task for her that will both threaten her life and give her the possibility of getting her life back.
As for Lori Weston…. she is going to be a formidable addition to 5-0. She will not back down from Steve. She can definitely pull her own weight. Her profiling skills will come in handy too. I’m waiting to see how much she is used in the next couple of episodes. Being the episode that was her introduction it seems logical that she get so much screen time with McGarrett at the expense of the Danny/Steve combo. I was alright with it but I don’t want to see that continue. I also think that once the entire team is back together, Lori and Kono are going to make a very formidable sisterhood!

Excellent review as usual. I have one concern about Kono. Is it possible that there is a behind the scenes contract dispute between the producers and her? I do hope this gets resolved soon. Thank you for meaning of the title.

You’re always so positive about the show and you help make the show that much more understandable for those of us too busy to really watch it because we’re tweeting away about how “horsie always beats airplane” or how no self respecting local boy would walk out of the ABC store with a shirt like that. I really do appreciate it. While this week’s episode didn’t “wow” me, the old adage in media still rings true… “always leave em wanting more…”

Hi Wendie – sorry to be so late on this but better late than never. I truly am back in the saddle too and racing to catch up on all the new news and interesting discussions. Honestly the plot wasn’t terribly stimulating this week compared to the great start of the season but then again I think their usual work day probably won’t be nearly as exciting as what’s really going on with Five-0!!! We finally have them back together as a team – at least as far as the guys are concerned minus Kono but nevertheless Five-0 as a unit is back at work. I didn’t think they would be back so fast or so easily inspite of all the new conditions and it would appear that the new Lt. Gov is keeping close tabs on McGarrett since he knew so quickly that they let Wofat’s underling go free so easily and quite honestly I didn’t think it was such a big deal since he’s really just a small fish who isn’t going to supply them with all the answers.
As for Fry – well it would really seem that the Lt Gov really means business about cleaning up the mess the other Gov left from him to deal with. I had to watch that scene with Kono several times to truly understand why he’s so hard on her and when he told Chin that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – it really made me mad initially but then it could be interpreted differently since he carefully looked at their records and I’m sure he’s aware that Chin and Kono are from a good breed of cops and he will do anything to get what he wants to get the job done. So Fry may not be likeable and he’s going to be downright nasty at times but I betcha he’s a veteran cop….a tough SOB who answers to the new Lt. Gov and not Wofat. So I think Fry is going to be an interesting “conflict” type of character for the show and I really like the fact that not every character on this show is going to be so likeable. In contrast to the loveable Five-0’s along with Max and Kamekona, its going to make the show much more fun to have characters that we simply will hate. Peter Lenkov promised that this season will be tough and hard on the Five-0’s and that they won’t be getting away with everything like before makes the show even more fun and interesting to watch.
As for Lori – truly like her – she just makes Jenna look “crappy” and weak as a character in my opinion. She wasn’t very believable as a character until the very last minute. I think the scene in Steve’s office with Steve and Jenna was quite telling in that perhaps Steve is suspicious of her especially when she told him that ther fiancee may not be dead after all, the look on Steve’s face when he looked down – just briefly told me that he didn’t believe her and that he was already suspicious of her and no one seemed to sad to see her go though there were hugs when she left the office. She’ll be back and I’m sure that her return back will be a huge story arch that promises to be “shocking” according to Peter’s tweet.
I think seeing Steve all GQ’d up raised some eyebrows…but I love the wardrobe change…..it suits him and it also showed how capable he is being in charge of the team even though he has Danny as a partner and now Lori….Steve is still Steve thanks to Danny and also thanks to the fact that even when Lori knew that he deliberately side-lined her and that she showed a moment of feminine vulnerability – there is a side to Steve that will always have a soft spot…. no matter how tough he is…he’s a real softy too and that’s why when Jenna took such liberties with his trust of her…its going to come back to bite her and he won’t be so forgiving.

As for Fry – well it would really seem that the Lt Gov really means business about cleaning up the mess the other Gov left from him to deal with. I had to watch that scene with Kono several times to truly understand why he’s so hard on her and when he told Chin that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – it really made me mad initially but then it could be interpreted differently since he carefully looked at their records and I’m sure he’s aware that Chin and Kono are from a good breed of cops and he will do anything to get what he wants to get the job done. So Fry may not be likeable and he’s going to be downright nasty at times but I betcha he’s a veteran cop….a tough SOB who answers to the new Lt. Gov and not Wofat. So I think Fry is going to be an interesting “conflict” type of character for the show and I really like the fact that not every character on this show is going to be so likeable. In contrast to the loveable Five-0’s along with Max and Kamekona, its going to make the show much more fun to have characters that we simply will hate. Peter Lenkov promised that this season will be tough and hard on the Five-0’s and that they won’t be getting away with everything like before makes the show even more fun and interesting to watch.
As for Lori – truly like her – she just makes Jenna look “crappy” and weak as a character in my opinion. She wasn’t very believable as a character until the very last minute. I think the scene in Steve’s office with Steve and Jenna was quite telling in that perhaps Steve is suspicious of her especially when she told him that ther fiancee may not be dead after all, the look on Steve’s face when he looked down – just briefly told me that he didn’t believe her and that he was already suspicious of her and no one seemed to sad to see her go though there were hugs when she left the office. She’ll be back and I’m sure that her return back will be a huge story arch that promises to be “shocking” according to Peter’s tweet.
I think seeing Steve all GQ’d up raised some eyebrows…but I love the wardrobe change…..it suits him and it also showed how capable he is being in charge of the team even though he has Danny as a partner and now Lori….Steve is still Steve thanks to Danny and also thanks to the fact that even when Lori knew that he deliberately side-lined her and that she showed a moment of feminine vulnerability – there is a side to Steve that will always have a soft spot…. no matter how tough he is…he’s a real softy too and that’s why when Jenna took such liberties with his trust of her…its going to come back to bite her and he won’t be so forgiving.
Hi Wendie – sorry to be so late on this but better late than never. I truly am back in the saddle too and racing to catch up on all the new news and interesting discussions. Honestly the plot wasn’t terribly stimulating this week compared to the great start of the season but then again I think their usual work day probably won’t be nearly as exciting as what’s really going on with Five-0!!! We finally have them back together as a team – at least as far as the guys are concerned minus Kono but nevertheless Five-0 as a unit is back at work. I didn’t think they would be back so fast or so easily inspite of all the new conditions and it would appear that the new Lt. Gov is keeping close tabs on McGarrett since he knew so quickly that they let Wofat’s underling go free so easily and quite honestly I didn’t think it was such a big deal since he’s really just a small fish who isn’t going to supply them with all the answers.
