UH baseball signs 9 to class of 2017

The University of Hawaii Rainbow baseball team has signed nine players for the class of 2017 during the fall signing period.

Connor Zalewski, a right-handed pitcher from Mid-Pacific, is one of six high school commitments and the only one from Hawaii.

The other high school kids are LHP/Util Alex Baeza of Jordan (Utah) H.S., 3B Dustin Demeter of Dos Pueblos (Calif.) H.S., 1B/OF Adam Fogel of Palos Verdes (Calif.) H.S., RHP/INF Carter Loewen of Yale Secondary (British Columbia) and OF Jacob Sniffen of Westview (Calif.) H.S.

The three junior-college transfers are RHP Nick Belzer of Des Moines (Iowa) C.C., SS Terrell Tate of Moorpark (Calif.) C.C. and OF Dylan Vchulek from Bellevue (Wash.) College.

Belzer signed with Kansas State out of high school before ending up at junior college.

Tate hit .321 with eight doubles, a triple and 29 runs scored last season at Moorpark.

Vchulek hit .395 with six doubles, a triple, 28 runs scored and 12 stolen bases at Bellevue last season.

UH opens its 2016 season Feb. 13 and 14 with two games at UH-Hilo.
