Rainbow Wahine fall hard at USC in season opener

USC raced out to an early lead and pulled away to a 76-44 win over the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team on Friday in Los Angeles.

The Trojans’ Courtney Jaco hit a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the game. USC opened the contest with an 11-0 run and led 25-12 after the first quarter, remaining firmly in control the rest of the way to send the Rainbow Wahine to a season-opening loss.

USC forward Kristen Simon led all scorers with 16 points on 7-for-13 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. Guard Jordan Adams added 11 points and Ja’Tavia Tapley finished with 10 off the bench. The Trojans shot 50 percent from the field and outrebounded UH 44-26.

Guards Briana Harris, Sarah Toeaina and Olivia Crawford led UH with eight points each. Lahni and Leah Salanoa both added seven points. UH shot just under 30 percent for the game and went 7-for-29 in the second half.

UH committed 18 turnovers, leading to 23 USC points, and were outscored in the paint 46-24.

UH’s opening weekend continues Sunday at Cal State Bakersfield.

The Football team and Beerman have to face top power conference teams in their opening and early season. The AD’s pet, however, was intentionally given a cupcake schedule his first year to “ease” him in, according to AD Matlin. Yet even in his second season, the other sports get no such break but the AD’s pet, Ganot, gets not only another cupcake season that he shouldn’t have, but also a raise and extension.

Schedules are created many years ago…

I may be mistaken, but only football schedules games years in advance. Other sports, both men and women, schedule their games only a few months in advance (I believe). Anyway, we all knew Laura Beeman has a huge task this season, but I am confident she will have the team ready for conference competition.

Beeman will be doing a lot of scream’n.
