No Pacific-wide tsunami from strong quake in South Pacific

A magnitude-6.4 struck off Papua New Guinea but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials in Hawaii said today.
A strong earthquake in the South Pacific did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami that would threaten the Hawaiian islands, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said today.
The 6.4 magnitude quake, which struck at about 5:36 p.m. Hawaii time, was centered 69 miles south-southeast of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea at a depth of about 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the warning center on Oahu said.
