Body of South Carolina man recovered off Big Island

Hawaii island firefighters recovered a body off of Kailua-Kona early today after a South Carolina man last seen at Old Kona Airport beach park was reported missing Sunday.

The Hawaii County Fire Department said a woman reported her 51-year-old husband missing after he was last seen walking north at the beach park to go snorkeling, about three hours earlier.

Firefighters responded shortly before 5:40 p.m. The fire department’s rescue boat and helicopter conducted a search along the rocky shoreline for the missing snorkeler. The Coast Guard and police also assisted.

At 1:38 a.m. today, a Coast Guard helicopter spotted a body about 1 1/2 miles off of the beach park.

Fire rescue retrieved the body and turned the case over to police.

Police identified the victim as Richard Reikowski and said an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of his death.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 935-3311.

Correction: The Coast Guard spotted a body in the water about 1 1/2 miles off of the Old Kona Airport beach park. A previous version of this story incorrectly said the body was spotted about 11 1/2 miles off of the beach park.
