Honolulu Marathon: lane closures and detours

The course map for the 2017 Honolulu Marathon.

Numerous lanes were closed in the downtown, Kakaako and East Honolulu neighborhoods, beginning at 12:30 a.m. today for the 45th Honolulu Marathon.

An estimated 28,000 runners are expected to run the marathon, which started at 5 a.m. with fireworks on Ala Moana Boulevard near Queen Street. The route travels westbound to Nimitz Highway, right onto Nuuanu Avenue, King Street, Kapiolani Boulevard and Piikoi Street and then left onto Ala Moana again. The course continues on Kalakaua Avenue, Monsarrat Avenue and onto Paki Avenue, Diamond Head Road, through 18th, Kilauea and Waialae avenues to Kalanianaole Highway into Hawaii Kai.

The route continues on Hawaii Kai Drive to Keahole Street, back to Kalanianaole Highway and turns on Kealaolu to Kahala avenues to Diamond Head Road and back along Kalakaua Avenue to the finish line at Kapiolani Park.

One or more lanes will be closed or coned off until athletes complete each section of the course. Roadways will be progressively opened as the athletes clear the area. Tow-away zones are in effect from 1 a.m. until 5 p.m. today. Some bus routes will be canceled or detoured.

In addition, Honolulu Marathon officials said drones will not be allowed to fly over racers or crowds this year.

The following roadways are closed or restricted:

>> Starting at 12:30 a.m., Ala Moana Boulevard from Atkinson Drive to Ward Avenue was detoured, including access to Ala Moana Park. It reopens at about 8 a.m.

>> From 2:30 a.m., Ala Moana Boulevard/Nimitz Highway Koko Head-bound traffic from Nuuanu to Ward Avenue was detoured left at Smith Street. Motorists are advised to use Vineyard Boulevard as a detour route.

>> From 3:30 a.m., King Street from Nuuanu Avenue to Kapiolani Boulevard. Traffic was detoured at Smith Street.

>>From 3:30 a.m., Kapiolani Boulevard in both directions from King to Piikoi streets. Ewa bound traffic was detoured mauka bound at Piikoi Street.

>> From 1 a.m., Piikoi Street in both directions from Kapiolani to Ala Moana boulevards. Local traffic was permitted to residents in this area till 3 a.m.

>> From 3:30 a.m., Kalakaua Avenue was detoured left onto Kuhio Avenue.

>> From 4:30 a.m., Kalakaua Avenue mauka side between Monsarrat Avenue and Poni Moi Road until the marathon is over. The makai lanes will be contra-flowed for two-way traffic at approximately 9 a.m. Limited to resident traffic only; patrons of the Outrigger Canoe Club and Elks Club must enter via Kapahulu Avenue.

>> At 1:30 a.m., Kapahulu Avenue makai bound was closed at Kuhio Avenue. Local traffic to Kalakaua Avenue – makai will be permitted after 9 a.m.

>> From 4:30 a.m., Monsarrat Avenue from Kalakaua Avenue to Paki Avenue is closed until the event is over at 3 p.m. Traffic is limited to tour bus pickups only. There will be a No Parking/Tow-Away Zone on both sides of Monsarrat Avenue from Kalakaua to Paki Avenue.

>> From 4:30 a.m., Paki Avenue from Monsarrat to Kalakaua Avenue is closed for the duration of the marathon. Local traffic only — access to the Diamond Head Tennis Courts reopen at 9 a.m.

>> Beginning at 3:30 a.m., all eastbound traffic on H-1 freeway was routed off at the Waialae Avenue off-ramp/22nd Avenue. H-1 traffic will be partially re-opened directly to the contraflow lane beginning at approximately 8:30 a.m., which will continue until the makai lanes of Kalanianaole Highway (eastbound) are re-opened at approximately 2 p.m.

>> From 3:30 a.m., Kalanianaole Highway from Ainakoa Street to Hawaii Kai Drive makai side will have restricted access. The mauka side of the highway was contra-flowed for two-way traffic, two lanes westbound, one lane eastbound. From 5 a.m., westbound Kalanianaole Highway traffic was detoured onto Ainakoa Street to Malia Street to Kilauea Avenue until approximately 8:30 a.m.

>> From about 3:30 a.m., Kalanianaole Highway was closed to through traffic from Hawaii Kai Drive to Keahole Street until the area is clear. Traffic was detoured onto Hawaii Kai Drive via Kawaihae Road to Lunalilo Home Road. Maunalua Bay boat ramp traffic must enter from the Koko Head end.

>> 18th Avenue from Diamond Head Road to Kilauea Avenue until runners clear the area. Traffic was detoured at Diamond Head Road and Makapuu Avenue. Local Traffic Only access to Diamond Head Crater only was restricted to Civil Defense, FAA, and National Guard personnel only.

>> Diamond Head Road, Kahala and Kealaolu Avenues is being controlled by police until the volume of runners diminishes to allow the safe movement of vehicles.

>> Kahala Towers, Kahala Hotel and Resort, and Waialae Country Club traffic will be permitted via Aukai Avenue and Pueo Street when safe, approximately 11:30 a.m.

>> From about 5:30 a.m., Kealaolu Avenue from Waialae Avenue to Kahala Avenue until the area is clear. Local traffic may be permitted by direction of Honolulu police at Aukai Avenue.

>> At 4 a.m., all eastbound lanes of Kilauea Avenue from 18th to Waialae avenues will be closed until runners clear the area. Westbound lanes are contra-flowed to permit two-way traffic. Vehicular traffic exiting the lower Kahala area must cross Kilauea Avenue at Hunakai Street. Expect delays until 11 a.m.

>> From about 2:30 a.m. on Hawaii Kai Drive makai lanes from Kalanianaole Highway to Keahole Street until the area is clear. The mauka side lanes are contra-flowed for two-way traffic.

>> From about 2:30 a.m., Keahole Street makai-bound lanes until the area is clear. Traffic is contra-flowed in the mauka-bound lanes for two-way flow. Entrance and exit from the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center is permitted.
