First Hawaiian Bank is extending its donation collection for the Aloha for Hawaii Fund through June 30. All First Hawaiian branches in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan are accepting monetary donations to support the Kilauea Volcano relief efforts on the Big Island and the recovery from flooding that occurred on Kauai and in East Oahu.

All contributions to the Aloha for Hawaii Fund will be donated to The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services in Hawaii to provide direct assistance to the affected communities. The funds will be used to provide water, shelter, food, clothing and emotional support to those affected.

Kauai residents eligible for mortgage and rent aid

Kauai residents affected by the devastating flooding that struck the island in April can get help paying their housing bill under a new assistance program offered through the Kauai Board of Realtors.

The funds come from a $100,000 grant awarded to the board by the Realtors Relief Foundation, a national charitable foundation dedicated to providing housing-related assistance to victims of disasters.

“This award will allow us to help Kauai residents affected by the devastating floods make their rent or mortgage payment, up to $1,800 per household,” said Karen Ono, executive officer of the Kauai Board of Realtors.

Affected Kauai residents can apply for assistance with their monthly mortgage payment if their homes were damaged by the Kauai flooding disaster, or with their rent if they were displaced from their primary residences by the flooding. Applicants will need to provide proof of residency and a copy of their mortgage or rent statement or agreement.

The application for disaster relief assistance can be found on the Kauai Board of Realtors website at KauaiBoard.com. All applications must be submitted by July 31 and will be reviewed anonymously without applicant names.

Ag board approves loans for flood, lava victims

The state Board of Agriculture has approved parameters for emergency low-interest agricultural loans for farmers suffering damage due to the heavy rain and flooding on Kauai and Oahu in April and the current eruption phase at Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii island.

The board approved the emergency loan program, which offers disaster-related loans of up to $500,000 at an interest rate of 3 percent, with loan terms to be determined on a case-by-case basis. The state Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Loan Division will process loan applications based on past farm production, projected cash flow and disaster recovery plans. Three-year residency and other requirements usually necessary for agricultural loans also will be waived. Loan applications will be accepted until June.

In addition to the disaster loan program, HDOA also offers microloans of up to $25,000 that involve less paperwork, and offers swifter processing. Loan officers will work with those with existing agricultural loans on loan payment deferrals. The Agricultural Loan Division can be contacted at 973-9460.
