Maui County firefighters rescued two missing hikers who were likely suffering from hypothermia about 500 feet below the Haleakala National Park visitor center Saturday night.

The male and female hikers were described as being in their 30s by Maui fire officials. They were incoherent and unable to speak “likely due to hypothermia” when they were discovered at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, officials said today.

Officials described the conditions as 40 degrees inside a rescue vehicle and raining outside.

Firefighters used stretchers to carry the hikers to an awaiting ambulance.

The National Park Service called for assistance in finding the missing hikers at 8:32 p.m. Fire crews from the Makawao and Kahului fire stations responded and the first crews arrived before 10 p.m., according to officials.
