The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for the owner of a 10-foot-long, pale yellow surfboard found off of Oahu’s North Shore on Sunday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received the report of the lost surfboard at 7:46 p.m. Sunday after good Samaritans found it off Aweoweo Beach Park in Waialua. They watched it drift toward shore, retrieved it, took photos and remained with it until a Honolulu Fire Department engine crew responded.

The HFD found no evidence of the owner or signs of distress. The board has a flame pattern along the right side. No leash was found.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched the Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point for a search.

“We don’t know if the board drifted from offshore or if this was an afternoon surf session gone wrong,” said Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command duty officer Charles Turner in a news release. “Our thanks to the good Samaritans who recovered the board and called it in.”

Weather at the time was reported as seas of less than 1 foot with winds of 22 miles per hour and good visibility.

The Coast Guard reminds waterway users to label or register all gear, watercraft and vessels with contact information — a name and phone number — to assist responders in identifying owners and potentially alleviating long searches.

Anyone with information about the owner of the board is asked to contact the Coast Guard at 842-2600.
