1 injured in Ala Wai Manor condo fire

Honolulu firefighters responded to a condo fire this morning on McCully Street.
A man was injured today from smoke inhalation due to a fire in his McCully condo unit.
The Honolulu Fire Department received a call about a unit fire at Ala Wai Manor, 620 McCully St., at 7:41 a.m. today, Battalion Chief John Bowers said. HFD sent 11 units and 43 personnel to battle the fire with the first company arriving at 7:45 a.m. to see smoke and flames emanating from the ninth floor, Bowers said.
Lisa Chau, 42, was sleeping when her building’s fire alarm woke her up around 7:30 a.m. She evacuated the building to the outside parking lot with her fiance Chad Goldstein, 10-month-old baby Evan Goldstein and rescue dog named Pono. Chau said she was concerned at first until residents received the all clear to return to the building shortly after firefighters extinguished the fire.
The fire was brought under control at 7:54 and extinguished at 8:09 a.m., Bowers said.
The injured resident was transported to Straub for treatment. Bowers did not reveal the condition of the man.
The mauka-bound lanes on McCully Street were closed by Ala Wai Boulevard, but reopened shortly after 9 a.m.
The cause of the fire and estimated cost of damage have yet to be determined.
No other details were immediately available.
