Rainbow Wahine rally falls short at Cal State Bakersfield

A late rally fell short and the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team closed a two-game road trip with a 78-69 loss to Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday.

The host Roadrunners (9-3) went on a 13-0 run in the second half to open up a 70-58 lead with 6:44 left in the nonconference game at the Icardo Center in in Bakersfield, Calif.

UH (6-5) answered with an 11-2 run and closed to within three when Briana Harris scored while drawing a foul and completed the three-point play with 1:40 left. But CSUB’s Tyonna Outland scored on a driving layup and the Roadrunners pulled away again in the final minute to hand UH its first road loss of the season.

The loss left with UH with a split of its pre-holiday road trip. The Rainbow Wahine return to the Stan Sheriff Center on New Year’s Eve to face Hawaii Pacific.

Destiny King led the Rainbow Wahine with 15 points and Ashleigh Karaitiana added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Morgan Mason scored 12 points with eight assists before leaving the game with an injury in the second half. Harris scored a season-high 10 points with five rebounds.

Outland led the Roadrunners with 18 points. Alyssa Shannon added 16 and Batabe Zemapre finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
