A man carrying a machete was fatally shot by a Honolulu police officer in Waianae this afternoon, police spokeswoman Michelle Yu said.
Yu said the shooting took place close to 2:15 p.m. in the area close to First Hawaiian Bank and Tamura Superette.
Waianae resident Lydia Esquadro said she heard repeated gunfire: “Boom, boom, boom!”
Police have closed off the area near Analipo Street, she said.
The man was pronounced dead at a hospital, said city Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
