Hawaiian Airlines plans to initiate its first nonstop Maui-Las Vegas service in the fall.

The twice-a-week flights will begin Oct. 3 and are expected to boost visitor traffic to the Valley Isle with the addition of 2,000 air seats a month, according to Hawaiian Chief Financial Officer Peter Ingram.

"We’ve known for a long time how popular Las Vegas is with Maui residents, so we’re pleased to offer this new flight to address that demand," Ingram said.

Hawaiian will use a 264-seat Boeing 767-300 aircraft on the route.

Hawaiian recently added two new Airbus A330-200s to its fleet, giving it more flexibility with its other planes. Hawaiian is using the 294-seat Airbus A330s for its Honolulu-Los Angeles service.

The new Maui-Las Vegas flight will depart Kahului Airport on Mondays and Thursdays at 8 a.m. and arrive at McCarran International Airport at 4:35 p.m. The return flight will depart Las Vegas on Sundays and Wednesdays at 6:25 p.m. and arrive on Maui at 9:25 p.m. When daylight saving time begins, the Las Vegas departure and arrival times will be about one hour earlier.

"This is great news for our community," Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares said. "Our residents will enjoy flying direct to a favorite destination."

By the end of this month, Hawaiian will have three direct flights between Maui and the mainland.

The airline initiated Maui-Oakland, Calif., service last weekend and will reintroduce Maui-San Diego service next week for the first time since 2008.

Hawaiian also has three daily flights between Honolulu and Las Vegas four days a week and two flights a day three times a week.
