Djou makes a bit of high-tech history on House floor

Hawaii’s Rep. Charles Djou says he was the first Congressman to use an iPad to give a speech on the House floor.

Two political blogs — The Hill’s “Twitter Room” and CNN’s “Political Ticker” — took note of the high-tech history yesterday.

"The House Parliamentarian told me that I’m the first Member of Congress to ever use an iPad during a floor speech," Djou tweeted after giving a speech against the financial reform bill, which passed 237-192.

Djou told CNN that his 12-hour commute home to Hawaii and the fact that he is new to Congress led him to purchase an iPad.

"I never touched the device until a month ago when I became a member of Congress," he said.

Djou, a Republican, beat state Sen. President Colleen Hanabusa and former U.S. Rep. Ed Case on May 22 to fill the 1st Congressional District seat vacated by Democrat Neil Abercrombie who is running for governor.
