UH Warriors hit the road with season hopes high
Maybe the University of Hawaii football team ought to be called the Road Warriors.
As if opening the season against 14th-ranked Southern California wasn’t enough of a challenge, Hawaii today embarks on a two-week, 11,000-mile trip for games at Army on Saturday and Colorado on Sept. 18. Rather than return from West Point only to fly back to Boulder in a few days, the Warriors opted to make camp in Las Vegas.
Hawaii more than acquitted itself against USC and appears to be superior to the Black Knights and Buffaloes.
No one’s talking bowl game just yet. But if the Warriors pass this test in convincing fashion, it will bode well for a team and its followers longing for a return to winning ways.
Hawaii’s roads earn deplorable distinction
Hawaii’s state-controlled highways continue to be among the bumpiest in the nation, according to a report by the libertarian Reason Foundation. For five years, Reason has ranked the quality of Hawaii’s state highways from 46th to 48th — this year it’s 47th.
In Hawaii and California, one-fourth of the urban interstates are in poor condition, so motorists "have to look out for the most potholes."
Out of necessity, many of them do: Hawaii ranks 15th in most congestion on urban interstates.
